The South African Navy frigate SAS Amatola arrived in Shanghai, China on 15 March, commencing a five-day goodwill visit that underscores growing maritime cooperation between South Africa and China. The visit marks the vessel’s first port call to Shanghai and only the second visit by a South African Navy ship to China since 2008.
The arrival of Amatola, a Valour-class frigate, highlights continued naval diplomacy efforts by South Africa as it seeks to strengthen international partnerships and expand its operational engagement in key regions. Prior to its arrival in China, the frigate participated in Exercise Milan in India, one of the region’s largest multilateral naval exercises, and took part in the associated fleet review, further demonstrating South Africa’s commitment to international maritime cooperation.
According to officials, the primary objective of the Shanghai visit is to deepen practical exchanges between the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and the South African Navy. Activities during the port call are expected to include professional exchanges, courtesy engagements and opportunities for crew interaction, all aimed at building interoperability and mutual understanding between the two forces.
The visit also reflects a broader strategic intent to enhance trust and cooperation between the two navies. In an evolving global security environment, such engagements contribute to confidence-building measures and support efforts to maintain regional peace and stability.
For the South African Navy, deployments of this nature form part of a wider commitment to maritime diplomacy, strengthening bilateral relations and ensuring a visible presence in international waters. The visit to Shanghai, following participation in Exercise Milan and the fleet review in India not only reinforces existing ties but also sets the stage for future collaboration between the two nations’ naval forces.
