France has solidified its commitment to advanced air defence with a major order for 48 RAPIDFire systems from Thales and KNDS France. The announcement comes as the first units of the versatile, remotely operated platform are deployed aboard next-generation naval tankers.

RAPIDFire offers close-in protection against drones, loitering munitions, aircraft, and subsonic missiles. The 40 mm cased telescoped (CT) cannon, integrated with Thales’ precision optronics, allows for rapid, accurate multi-target engagement. With a 140-round ready rack and a range of up to 4 km, it delivers exceptional operational agility across naval and land environments.
Four systems are already operational with the French Navy, including on the BRF Jacques Chevallier and Jacques Stosskopf. Land-based variants are under development with the French Air and Space Force, targeting base and frontline deployment.
A next-generation A3B airburst munition—under development—promises even greater lethality. With full capability expected by 2027, RAPIDFire is set to become a cornerstone of France’s integrated air defence strategy, backed by deep collaboration between Europe’s leading defence firms.
