The National Guard of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NGRK) has bolstered its strategic airlift capabilities with the delivery of three additional Y8 Pegasus transport aircraft, bringing its operational fleet to six. Manufactured by China’s Shaanxi Aircraft Corporation, the Y8F-200W/WA platforms form the backbone of Kazakhstan’s modernisation drive in military and internal security aviation.

Delivered on 22 July 2025, the new aircraft—designated bort numbers 04, 05, and 06—arrived as part of a broader procurement plan initiated in 2018. With two more units expected in the near future, Kazakhstan’s total Y8 acquisition will reach eight aircraft.
These powerful platforms complement a diverse fleet that includes Soviet-era An-26s and An-74s, Embraer ERJ135BJs, and Mil Mi-8/171 helicopters. Their mission scope spans troop deployment, VIP transport, cargo logistics, and civil defence operations. Operated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Guard plays a pivotal role in internal stability, infrastructure security, and rapid response.
The Y8, derived from the Antonov An-12, offers a cost-effective and versatile solution for medium- to long-range military logistics. Countries such as China, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Venezuela have deployed similar models, underscoring the platform’s global relevance. Its successor, the Y9, was developed to rival the C-130J Hercules in performance.
Kazakhstan’s investment in aerial mobility also includes the Airbus A400M, C295M variants, and legacy Antonov transports—positioning the nation as a regional leader in adaptable airlift capability.
