In a significant boost to U.S. Army readiness and fleet modernisation, Oshkosh Defense has secured a three-year contract extension for the production of its Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles A2 (FMTV A2). The updated agreement ensures continued orders through February 2028, including delivery of three critical Low Velocity Air Drop (LVAD) variants.

Tactical Backbone of Army Mobility
The FMTV A2 platform forms the logistical backbone of the U.S. Army’s medium vehicle fleet, offering enhanced payload capacity, increased protection, and superior mobility. Designed to meet the demands of Multi-Domain Operations (MDO), the A2 variant supports dispersed and contested missions while remaining adaptable for future technology integration.
“This extension ensures that the Army continues to modernise with a proven, adaptable platform,” said Pat Williams, Chief Programs Officer at Oshkosh Defense. “The LVAD variants directly fill capability gaps for airborne operations in hostile terrain.”
Airborne Ready: LVAD Variants Lead the Way
The LVAD-capable FMTV A2 vehicles are engineered for strategic air drop missions, allowing them to be deployed deep into contested environments with minimal footprint. Their inclusion in the contract reflects the U.S. Army’s increased focus on rapid response and forward-deployed logistics.
Modular by Design, Built for Tomorrow
The FMTV A2 features a modular architecture, simplifying maintenance, streamlining the supply chain, and extending platform lifespan. The design allows for plug-and-play upgrades in communication, protection, power systems, and autonomy—making it a future-proof asset in the age of battlefield digitalisation.
Strengthening U.S. Industrial Base
Since its inception under the A1P2 contract in 2009, the FMTV platform has become a cornerstone of U.S. tactical mobility, with thousands in service globally. This latest extension ensures continued production at Oshkosh’s U.S.-based facilities, supporting American jobs and sustaining a robust defence industrial base.
Why It Matters
