Saab and Scania France have jointly signed a contract with the Direction générale de l’Armement for the supply of Giraffe 1X radars and the development of an integrated tactical vehicle solution for the French Armed Forces.
The contract includes 17 Giraffe 1X radar systems with one radar allocated for testing and evaluation while the remaining 16 will be mounted on the Scania V3P tactical vehicle chassis developed by Scania France and its SPAD (Scania Public and Defense) division in Angers, France.
The agreement also covers spare parts, training and support services. Saab and Scania France have established a joint consortium for the duration of the programme. Deliveries of the radar systems are scheduled between 2026 and 2027.
“We are proud to work together with Scania France on this important contract with the aim of modernising the short and very short-range air defence capabilities for the French Armed Forces,” said Carl-Johan Bergholm, Head of Saab’s business area Surveillance.
The Giraffe 1X is a compact 3D radar designed for a wide range of missions including air defence, counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS), protection of critical infrastructure and maritime surveillance applications. Already in service with several operators worldwide the software-based radar can also be continuously upgraded to address evolving threats and operational requirements.
