Private Raynard’s body was discovered near the Yellow Gate of the Madimbo Operational Base on 27 July 2025. Preliminary investigations suggest he may have been fatally trampled by a herd of elephants. His service weapon was found at the scene.
A formal Board of Inquiry has been launched to determine the full circumstances of the incident, with SANDF officials working alongside wildlife and environmental authorities.
“Private Raynard’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding our borders will not be forgotten,” said the SANDF.
Senior defence leadership, including Minister Angie Motshekga, General Rudzani Maphwanya, and Dr Thobeka Gamede, have extended condolences to his family and unit. Support services are being provided to both.
Operation CORONA remains a cornerstone of South Africa’s territorial defence strategy, with troops regularly confronting harsh terrain, criminal threats, and environmental dangers in the line of duty.
The SANDF honours Private Raynard’s service and sacrifice.
