The South African Navy celebrated its future leaders at a Passing Out Parade for 85 young officers at the SA Naval College in Gordon’s Bay on 26 September 2025. The graduates completed the 33-week Military Training for Officers Part 1 (MTO1) course, designed to develop leadership skills for entry-level command roles.

The parade included the reading of the Code of Conduct, inspection by the Chief of the Navy, precision sword drill, and a performance by the SA Navy Band. The highlight came as the new officers unveiled their ranks and received awards for perseverance and dedication.
One standout moment was the recognition of Sub Lieutenant Dwayne Klaasen, who received the Rooi Els Trophy, watched proudly by his father, retired Master Warrant Officer Kallien Klaasen, a SANDF veteran of nearly 40 years.
In his keynote address, Chief of the Navy Vice Admiral Monde Lobese congratulated the graduates and reminded them:
“Leadership is not about rank or title; it’s about setting an example, fostering trust, and making decisions that align with our values. As naval officers, you will be called upon to lead in situations where the margin for error is life and death.”
With their training complete, the Navy’s newest officers are ready to serve and lead with distinction.
